The Best New Cars Coming In 2011

The most anticipated cars due to hit showrooms in 2011.
 Vauxhall Ampera
Price: £28,995
Due in UK showrooms: spring 2012

We wouldn't normally get too excited about a new Vauxhall here, but the Ampera is different. It's electric, with an on-board generator engine (called a range extender), which allows the Ampera to travel further than the usual 100 miles other electric cars offer. If you want one, you can place your order right away, but you may not receive the car until 2012.

 Audi A6
Price: from £30,145
Due in UK showrooms: spring

The A6 is not just a big car physically, but big in terms of its importance for Audi. It's a big seller for the German marque and the new car promises to better compete with its BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class rivals on driver appeal. It features lots of efficiency savings thanks to lighter construction and leaner engines, too.

 BMW 6 Series
Price: starting from about £55,000
Due in UK showrooms: spring

BMW's big grand touring coupé - and convertible - features lots of style, plenty of performance and luxury. All with a price tag to match. The new model is certain to be greener thanks to BMW's latest EfficientDynamics technology. The 6 Series promises to be a beautifully accomplished all-rounder when it arrives early in 2011.

 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster
Price: £180,000
Due in UK showrooms: summer 2011

How do you out-glam the stunning Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG? Lop its top off and create a roadster. You might lose the signature gullwing doors of the coupé with this glamorous convertible, but who cares when it looks this good? Expected to be in showrooms in time for the summer and in all the hot spots around the world shortly after. Oh to be wealthy...

 Porsche Cayman R
Price: £51,731
Due in UK showrooms: February

It's a derivative model sure, but it's a lighter, harder charging Porsche Cayman - and that should make every keen driver happy. Dropping 55kg in weight, riding on more focused suspension, a manual gearbox and a mid-mounted, flat-six engine developing 330bhp, the Cayman R is very much our kind of car.

 Volkswagen Up!
Price: estimated to start at £9,000
Due in UK showrooms: summer

Volkswagen has been showing various Up! concept models for a while now and this summer we should see them start to reach showrooms. The city cars will be small, space efficient and sip fuel. The perfect car for these times then, with the promise of VW's fine build quality and desirable badge, too.

 Nissan LEAF
Price: £23,990
Due in UK showrooms: March

Stealing the thunder of the Ford Focus as the most important new car introduction in 2011 is the Nissan LEAF. It's probably the most significant car to be introduced this decade, not just this coming year. Why? It's the first fully production electric car from a mainstream maker to reach showrooms.

 Honda Jazz Hybrid
Price: £15,995
Due in UK showrooms: January

Hybrids just got smaller, and Honda is pushing the move forwards with its Jazz. Small hybrids make lots of sense, with smaller cars more advantageous around town and hybrid technology working best in the city. It's a shame then that the Jazz hybrid doesn't maximise this with a London Congestion Charge beating sub-100g/km of CO2.

Range Rover EvoquePrice: from £30,000Due in UK showrooms: summer
Victoria Beckham is apparently involved as a styling consultant for Range Rover's new Evoque, but let's not hold that against this exciting new SUV. Luxury, style and economy combine, though some of Range Rover's legendary off-road ability will be lost with the front-wheel drive models. Expect it to be a huge hit in the trendier parts of town.

 Aston Martin Cygnet
Price: likely to start at under £30,000
Due in UK showrooms: summer

Based on Toyota's iQ, but re-skinned to look like a mini Aston Martin, the Cygnet doesn't come with any Aston enhancements under the bonnet. Sure it'll be nice inside and looks good outside, but don't plan on winning any traffic light Grand Prix stand offs. No price has been confirmed, but it'll be on the wrong side of silly.

 BMW 1 Series M Coupé
Price: £39,990
Due in UK showrooms: May

An M car for these more austere times, the BMW 1 Series M Coupé brings the entry price down to a - relatively - more affordable level. Performance isn't dented either, with the 1 Series M Coupé boasting M3-rivalling performance. Muscular looks and a fruity exhaust note also enhance the appeal of M division's latest product.

 Ford Focus
Price: from £15,995
Due in UK showrooms: March

Forget new Lamborghinis and McLarens, this family hatchback is one of the most significant new car launches in 2011. Consistently a top seller, and likely to be the finest driving car in its class, the new Focus needs to be good if it's going to beat the latest VW Golf and Vauxhall Astra.

 Citroen DS3 Racing
Price: £23,100
Due in UK showrooms: early 2011

Hot hatches are very much back and Citroen wants a slice of the market with its DS3 Racing. This MINI Cooper S rival comes with all the DS3's cool, but with a bit more fire under its bonnet. The 207bhp machine reaches 62mph in just 6.5 seconds. Just 200 cars are coming to the UK.

 McLaren MP4-12C
Price: £168,500
Due in UK showrooms: summer

The most hotly anticipated supercar of 2011 is the new MP4-12C from McLaren. The Ferrari 458 Italia rival is due to arrive in the summer and promises sensational performance thanks to its 592bhp engine and light weight. Helping it with that brief is a carbon-fibre chassis and plenty of know-how borrowed from McLaren's F1 boffins.
